Got the January blues? Or just ready to start 2018 off with an adventure? Why not take a break and treat yourself to a new “mini” Interrail package, perfect for those short on time, or money, or who just want to dip a toe into Interrailing without, ya know, a full on, four-week commitment.
So what bang do you get for your bucks with these mini (seven-day) winter escapes?
First off is our 7 Day Winter Wonderland Package for a cracking £395.
You will begin your journey in Prague, where you can enjoy the city’s famous Christmas markets – browse the gorgeous gift-ware and handmade products, or simply fill your tum with delicious, local fayre straight off the pan. Think spit roasted ham and barbecued sausages followed by a Trdelník (a hot, sugar coated pastry), all washed down with a local beer).
Open every day (including Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day) from 2 December through to 6 January, the main markets are just five minutes apart at the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. There also smaller markets at Kampa Island and on the square at St George’s Basilica.
Aside from the markets, you can enjoy a spot of evening ice skating followed by a hot chocolate, watching the crowds go by. If you’re lucky enough to be in the city towards the end of February/early March watch out for the dazzling 10-day Bohemian Carnevale too, with its glittering, masked marches and exhibitions. Maybe even the odd party too…
Anyway, we digress – you’re on the Winter Wonderland Package and your next stop is Krakow in Poland, where the weather may be crisp, cold and (there’s a high chance) snowy but wrap up snug and enjoy the shopping, the lights, the food and the unbeatable Polish nightlife. And if you’re so over all this festive stuff – you could always check out the Krakow Mountain Festival in December, with film screenings, workshops and competitions.
You’ll then round off the week in either Vienna (where you can go ice skating in front of the illuminated town hall), Salzburg (where 6 December, St Nicolas′ Day, is an extra special one) or Budapest (check out the cute Christmas market at Vörösmarty Square). A tough choice – but hey, every city is definitely a winner.
Another week-long, mini Interrail getaway. aiming to bring you to some of the most picturesque and fantastically festive European destinations.
A seven day package, you’ll depart on the Eurostar from London’s St Pancras Station and head to beautiful Lille in France. This picturesque city has a month-long Christmas market covered in a huge crown of garlands. Here you can pick up arts and crafts from Russia, Canada and Poland – alongside some gingerbread and mulled wine. The Old Town is gorgeous in the crisp evening air, and Lille boasts a buzzing nightlife which belies its Olde Worlde charm.
Next stop is the medieval city of Brugges aka the Capital of Chocolate (it even has a museum dedicated to the stuff). This beautiful, medieval city is even more like a fairy tale than usual in winter – especially if you’re lucky enough for snow. Oh and, the Christmas markets here are pretty good too – of course!.
Finally, round your journey off in the Belgian capital, Brussels. Visit pre-New Year for the Winter Wonders (think ice rink, Christmas markets, Ferris Wheel, merry-go-rounds and an amazing festive atmosphere) or explore the city off season in January to March, avoiding the tourist mobs.
Happy travels guys
